Welcoming visitors with engaging audiovisual technology
When visitors first enter St John’s Terminal, they are greeted with a large Google logo illuminated by LED, six informative video walls and projection-mapped displays.
Google’s New York office at St. John's Terminal in Hudson Square is a new kind of workplace designed for effective team working and collaboration with clients. The building was once a bustling hub for incoming freight trains. Now, Google has transformed it into a modern office that prioritizes environmental efficiency and sustainability while honoring the site’s heritage.
St John’s Terminal is the North American headquarters of Google’s Global Business Organization, offering 1.3 million square feet of flexible office space and communal areas. The workspace is divided into distinct districts known as ‘neighborhoods’ that have a unique New York-themed visual and cultural style.
The innovative solution features RFID technology, sophisticated audio, immersive environments and projection mapping that blends with the historical fabric of the building to create an inspiring, collaborative environment.
Electrosonic designed, engineered and integrated the innovative audiovisual and acoustic technology solutions to assist project architects, content providers and technology partners.
Google’s goal was to create a dynamic environment that protected the site’s heritage while providing modern amenities that enable high levels of productivity and collaboration. They required a technological solution that would enhance the employee and visitor experience and align with their commitment to environmental stewardship.
Google needed expert technical support to create the engaging, inspiring space they envisioned. They required meticulous planning, strong project management, effective communication and collaboration in a partner that has expertise in designing, engineering, building and integrating custom audiovisual solutions within a large-scale historical building in a busy city-center location.
Electrosonic had to carefully integrate a large, diverse range of advanced technologies while preserving the historical integrity of the space.
Electrosonic is highly experienced in designing and integrating large-scale experiential technology solutions for historical buildings.
At St John’s Terminal, Electrosonic worked alongside a project team that included Adirondack, ASG (Advanced Systems Group), Atlantis Partners, COOKFOX, Deeplocal, Downstream, Gensler, Panasonic, Smart Monkeys, Structure Tone, Turner Construction and Unilumin to deliver a world-class workplace.
At the Design stage, Electrosonic's Technology Design Consulting team translated Deeplocal’s and Adirondack’s vision and creative design into a detailed technology solution. The design process spanned digital communications and video walls, specialty projection, acoustical design and audiovisual and control systems design.
At the Build stage, Electrosonic provided comprehensive engineering services, including technical direction, detailed engineering, installation and integration, system programming, commissioning and project management. Electrosonic’s careful integration ensured that the technology blended seamlessly with the architecture.
Experiential technology allows Google to have high levels of interactivity and personalization to welcome and engage employees and visitors.
Beyond the entrance, visitors can access a number of themed meeting spaces, including ‘The Garage’ - a meeting space for new Googlers that reminds them of the original garage where Google’s founders began. The blending of technology and history helps visitors gain a sense of appreciation for the company's growth.
The advanced audiovisual systems in the ‘neighborhood’ workspaces align with Google’s wider goal, which is to bring the company’s new workplace strategy to life and offer employees a more flexible approach to collaborative working.
Throughout the neighborhood workspaces and communal areas are large-scale technology deployments where audiovisual, immersive and interactive technologies play a key role in enabling collaboration and optimizing the employee and visitor experience.
