INTRODUCTION

When up to 90 visitors enter what looks like a routine tour of a planetarium, they have no idea they will be setting off on a spectacular odyssey around the galaxy in the company of a Super Hero from the Green Lantern Corps as he battles his arch enemies, Sinestro and Parallax.

Thanks to immersive technology and amazing special effects, visitors take a thrilling 4-dimensional ride on a flying theater that recreates the galaxy on one of the world’s largest half-dome screens. Galactic Odyssey is a visually stunning journey complete with the winds, mists, scents and sensations of a flight to distant worlds.

Electrosonic partnered with Thinkwell and Smart Monkeys to bring the creative vision to life, taking responsibility for the projection, lighting effects, audio, integration and show control solutions that create this highly realistic flight experience.

OVERVIEW

Green Lantern: Galactic Odyssey incorporates Brogent Technologies’ i-Ride system to take visitors on their voyage of discovery. To add another exciting dimension to the ride, it’s the first flying theater to feature 3D glasses.

The electric motion-based i-Ride system brings visitors up close to the massive half-dome screen on suspended seating. At 124 feet (38 meters) in diameter, it’s one of the largest screens of its type in the world and a superb digital canvas for the fully immersive experience that follows.

Stunning visuals and 60 frame-per-second computer animations are rendered in ultra-high 4K resolution on the vast screen by 8 Christie 4K projectors fitted with custom Jenoptic F-Theta lower lenses. The smooth motion i-Ride system, immersive audio, dramatic lighting and special effects, wind, scents and mist add to the exhilarating sensation of soaring through space with Green Lantern.

Audio makes an important contribution throughout the 4D ride with more than 130 speakers and subwoofers delivering immersive sound effects, soundtracks for video content and background music for visitors waiting to take flight.

Precise control is essential to this spectacular show, with content and effects managed by the show control system. The flying theater systems can be controlled and monitored locally by a touch panel or integrated with Smart Monkeys’ Parkwide Control System for centralized management.

CHALLENGE

The major technical challenge was to project the 4K high resolution content accurately on a massive half-dome screen. The solution required detailed projection studies and the development of custom lenses for the eight 4K projectors.

The show also required precise control to synchronize timing of content, lighting and special effects with the motion of the i-Ride seats. To maintain the element of surprise, the show control system had to manage cues for the reveals during the transition from planetarium to galactic ride.

SOLUTION

Electrosonic’s experience in large-scale dome projection and flying theater technologies enabled the team to ensure accurate projection. We carried out detailed projection studies and collaborated with projector and lens manufacturers to develop a custom solution for rendering the high-resolution images. Electrosonic designed and integrated a sophisticated show control system to monitor and manage the complex timing and delivery of the high-resolution multimedia content for this immersive, fast-paced 4D experience.
